                  _ Advocacy and Policy Monitoring

Improving the health of vulnerable populations often involves overcoming barriers of stigma and discrimination at the local, societal, and institutional levels. As part of our work, we collaborate with local communities and other civil society organizations to advocate for the health and human rights of all Rwandans. Whether this is through community sensitization on the rights of people living with HIV or national level advocacy to influence policies and create an enabling environment for the promotion of health and respect of rights for vulnerable groups.

HDI supports advocacy and policy change at the local and national level. We work with district authorities, schools, government institutions, and other organizations to promote both small and large-scale policy changes.  Successful advocacy requires building strong partnerships between communities, civil society organizations, the private sector, and government institutions. For this reason, HDI strives to collaborate with like-minded organizations and individuals to create an environment where all individuals are able to exercise their human rights and health care is accessible and equitable for all.

                  Current Projects:

                  • Promoting women's access to safe abortion services and revision of Rwanda's abortion laws.
                  • Addressing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights: Promoting access to condoms for secondary school youth in Rwanda.
                  • Advocating with Parliament to protect the health and human rights of Sex Workers by removing punitive laws that restrict access to HIV prevention services.
                  • Conducting research to identify barriers to practicing safe sex among youth (e.g. access to condoms and youth-friendly services).
